Instructor Biography

Hui Huang

Shenzhen University

She is a Distinguished Professor of Shenzhen University, where she directs the Visual Computing Research Center (VCC). She received her PhD in Applied Math from The University of British Columbia in 2008 and another PhD in Computational Math from Wuhan University in 2006. She is the recipient of NSFC Excellent Young Researcher program and Guangdong Technology Innovation Leading Talent award in 2015. Her research interests are mainly on Computer Graphics and Scientific Computing. She is currently a Distinguished Member of CCF, Senior Member of ACM, Associate Editor-in Chief of The Visual Computer and is on the editorial board of Computer Graphics Forum and Frontiers of Computer Science. She has served on the program committees of all major computer graphics international conferences, and is SIGGRAPH ASIA 2017 Technical Briefs and Posters Chair, SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Workshops Chair and SIGGRAPH ASIA 2014 Community Liaison Chair.

Daniel Cohen-Or

Tel-Aviv University

He is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science at Tel-Aviv University. He received a B.Sc. cum laude in both Mathematics and Computer Science (1985), a M.Sc. cum laude in Computer Science (1986) from Ben-Gurion University, and a Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science (1991) at State University of New York at Stony Brook. His research interests are in Computer Graphics, Visual Computing and Geometric Modeling and including rendering and modeling techniques, Shape Analysis, Shape Creation and Editing, 3D Reconstruction, Photo Processing, compression and streaming techniques, visibility, point set representation, morphing and volume graphics. He is on the editorial board of ACM TOG, and was on the editorial board of several other international journals including CGF, IEEE TVCG, The Visual Computer. He was the recipient of the Eurographics Outstanding Technical Contributions award in 2005. In 2013 he has received The People's Republic of China Friendship Award. In 2015 he has been named a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher. He edited the book "A Sampler of Useful Computational Tools for Applied Geometry, Computer Graphics, and Image Processing".

Yu Qiao

SIAT

He is a professor with the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), the Chinese Academy of Science, and the deputy director of multimedia research lab. His research interests include computer vision, deep learning, and robots. He has published more than 100 papers in international journals and conferences, including IEEE T-PAMI, IJCV, IEEE T-IP, IEEE T-SP, CVPR, ICCV, AAAI, ECCV. He received Jiaxi Lv young research award from Chinese academy of sciences. He is a senior member of IEEE. He was the first runner-up at the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge 2015 in scene recognition, and the winner at the ActivityNet Large Scale Activity Recognition Challenge 2016 in video classification. His group also achieved top places in wide international challenges such as ChaLearn, LSun, THUMOUS.

 

Yizhou Yu

The University of Hong Kong 

He is currently a full professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He was first a tenure-track and then a tenured professor at UIUC for more than 10 years. He has also collaborated with eBay Research, Google Brain and Microsoft Research in the past. He received his PhD degree in computer science from University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a MS degree in applied mathematics and a BE degree in computer science and engineering from Zhejiang University.Prof Yu has made many important contributions to AI and visual computing, including computer vision, images and graphics, and VR/AR. He is a recipient of 2011 and 2005 ACM SIGGRAPH/EG SCA Best Paper Awards, 2007 NNSF China Overseas Distinguished Young Investigator Award, 2002 US National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and 1998 Microsoft Graduate Fellowship. Innovative technologies co-invented by him has been frequently adopted by the film and special effects industry. He has more than 100 publications in international conferences and journals. His current research interests include deep learning methods for machine intelligence, computational visual media, geometric computing, intelligent video surveillance, and biomedical data analysis.

Andrei Sharf

Ben-Gurion University

He is an associate professor at the computer science department at Ben-Gurion University. Previosly, he has been a Visiting Associate Professor at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology(SIAT) Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Postdoctoral researcher at the School of Computer Science in UC-Davis U.S. His research interests are in computer graphics, including geometry processing, interactive techniques, urban modeling and motion reconstruction.

Ariel Shamir

The Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya

He is a Professor at the school of Computer Science at the Interdisciplinary Center in Israel, where he is currently the vice-dean. Prof. Shamir received his Ph.D. in computer science in 2000 from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He spent two years at the center for computational visualization at the University of Texas in Austin. He was a visiting scientist at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs in Cambridge MA (2006), MIT and Disney Research (2013). Prof. Shamir has numerous publications in journals and international refereed conferences, and holds several patents. He has a broad commercial experience working with, and consulting numerous companies including Mitsubishi Electric, Disney, PrimeSense (now Apple), Verisk and more. He was an associate editor for Computers and Graphics journal (2010-2014), IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (2015-2017), and is currently an associate editor for Graphical Models and Computational Visual Media. He also served on the program committee of many leading international conferences, including SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, and Eurographics. Prof. Shamir was named one of the most highly cited researchers on the Thomson Reuters list. He specializes in geometric modeling, computer graphics, image processing and machine learning. He is a member of the ACM SIGGRAPH, IEEE Computer, AsiaGraphics and EuroGraphics associations.

Yue Dong

Microsoft Research Asia

He is a lead researcher at Internet Graphics Group in Microsoft Research Asia, his work focuses mainly on appearance modeling with data coherency. Yue received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University in 2011, under the supervision of Professor Heung-Yeung Shum.

Huamin Qu

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

He is a full professor and postgraduate programs coordinator in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He also serves as the coordinator of the newly founded Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) group at the CSE department. His main research interests are in visualization and human-computer interaction, with focuses on urban informatics, social network analysis, e-learning, and text visualization. He has co-authored about 100 refereed papers including about 40 papers in the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). His research has been recognized by many awards including 7 best paper/honorable mention awards, 2009 IBM Faculty Award, 2014 Higher Education Scientific and Technological Progress Award (Second Class) from the Ministry of Education of China, and 2016 Distinguished Collaborator Award from Huawei Nah's Ark Lab. He obtained a BS in Mathematics from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, an MS and a PhD (2004) in Computer Science from the Stony Brook University.

Jin Huang

Zhejiang University

He received the PhD degree from Computer Science Department, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 2007, with Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of China Computer Federation. He is a professor in the State Key Lab of CAD&CG of Zhejiang University. His research interests include geometry processing and physically-based simulation. He has published over 10 ACM TOG papers, and served as associated Editor of CAGD and PC members of ACM SIGGRAPH Asia, SGP and SCA etc. important international conferences.

Hao Zhang

Simon Fraser University

Professor of the School of Computing Science, Simon Fraser University, and Director of the Graphics, Usability, and Visualization (GrUVi) Lab. His research area is computer graphics with a focus on geometry modeling and processing, shape analysis, and 3D content creation. He has published more than 100 papers on these topics, of which about 33 are on SIGGRAPH. He is an editor-in-chief of Computer Graphics Forum and an associate editor of Graphical Models and the Visual Computer. He received an NSERC DAS Award in 2014, the Best Paper Award from SGP 2008, a Most Cited Paper Award for the journal Computer-Aided Design in 2010, and a NSFC Overseas Scholar Collaborative Research Award in 2015.

Manolis Savva

Princeton University 

He is a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. He completed his PhD at the Stanford graphics lab, advised by Pat Hanrahan. His research focuses on human-centric 3D scene analysis, and simulation for scene understanding. He has also worked in data visualization, grounding of natural language to 3D content, and in creating large-scale scene datasets for 3D deep learning.

Lei Shi

Institute of Software Chinese Academy of Sciences 

He is an associate professor in the State Key Laboratory of Computer Science, Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Before that, he was a research staff member and research manager at IBM Research - China. He holds B.S. (2003), M.S. (2006) and Ph.D. (2008) degrees from Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University. His current research interests are Visual Analytics and Data Mining, with more than 70 papers published in top-tier venues, such as IEEE TVCG, TKDE, TC, VIS, ICDE, ICDM, Infocom, ACM Sigcomm, TKDD and CSCW. He is the recipient of IBM Research Division Award on "Visual Analytics" and the IEEE VAST Challenge Award twice in 2010 and 2012. He has organized several workshops on combining visual analytics and data mining, in ICDM, CIKM, etc, and served on the program committees and organizing committees of many related conferences such as KDD, WSDM, Graph Drawing, PacificVis, etc. He is an IEEE senior member.

Zhaopeng Cui

Simon Fraser University

He is a Ph.D. candidate at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Before joining SFU, he was a Ph.D. candidate at National University of Singapore. He received his B.Sc. (2009) and his M.Sc. (2012) from Xidian University. His research interests are concentrated in 3D computer vision and computer graphics, more specifically, in large-scale image-based 3D reconstruction, video editing, multi-view stereo and SLAM.

Dani Lischinski

Hebrew University of Jerusalem

He is a full Professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He received his PhD from the Department of Computer Science and the Program of Computer Graphics at Cornell University in 1994, spent two years as a post-doctoral research associate at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, and a sabbatical year at Pixar Animation Studios. In 2012 he received the Eurographics Outstanding Technical Contributions Award. He has made numerous significant contributions in several areas of computer graphics, including photorealistic and non-photorealistic rendering, image-based modeling and rendering, texture synthesis, physically-based animation, high dynamic range tone mapping, and interactive manipulation and editing of images and video.

Oliver Deussen

University of Konstanz

He graduated at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and is professor at University of Konstanz (Germany) and visiting professor at SIAT (Chinese Academy of Science) Shenzhen. 2014 he was awarded within the 1000 talents plan. 2012-2015 he served as Co-Editor in Chief of Computer Graphics Forum, currently he is Vice-President of Eurographics Association. His areas of interest are modeling and rendering of complex biological systems, non-photorealistic rendering as well as Information Visualization. He also contributed papers to geometry processing, sampling methods, and image-based modelling.

Ruizhen Hu

Shenzhen University

She is an assistant professor at the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Shenzhen Univerisy. She received her Ph.D. degree in Applied Math from Department of Mathematics at Zhejiang University and joined VCC in 2015. From Oct. 2012 to Oct. 2014, she visited the GrUVi Lab of Simon Fraser University. Her current research interests are in the areas of computer graphics, especially in shape analysis, geometry processing and fabrication. She has published 6 papers in leading journals and major conferences, e.g., ACM Transactions on Graphics (SIGGRAPH & SIGGRAPH Asia) and Computer Graphics Forum (SGP). She is the recipient of 2015 Shenzhen Peacock Talent Award.

Pengfei Xu

Shenzhen University

He is an assistant professor at the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Shenzhen Univerisy. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2015 and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at HKUST from Mar. 2015 to Mar. 2016. His primary research lies in Human Computer Interaction and Computer Graphics. His work has been published at the top journals and conferences in HCI and Computer Graphics, e.g., ACM Transactions on Graphics (SIGGRAPH Asia), ACM CHI, ACM UIST, and IEEE TVCG.

Lin Di

Shenzhen University

He is an assistant professor at the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Shenzhen Univerisy. He received his Ph.D. degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, affiliated with Computer Science and Engineering Department. His research interests include computer vision and machine learning. He is currently working on deep learning to solve object/scene classification and segmentation. He has published 5 papers in top journals and conferences, e.g., IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI) and IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR).

Qian Zheng

Shenzhen University

She is an assistant professor at the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Shenzhen Univerisy. She received her Ph.D. Degree from SIAT in 2015, co-supervised by Hui Huang and Baoquan Chen. Her main research interests are 3D urban modeling and 4D reconstruction. She has published a few papers in the leading computer graphic journals and conferences, such as ACM TOG, SIGGRAPH, EUROGRAPHICS, CGF and ICCV.

 

Jiacheng Ren

Shenzhen University

Graphic Design Engineer at VCC. He received his Bachelor Degree from QingDao University in 2008. Now he is responsible for designing fine art and providing technical support for 3D modeling. His interest is comics and 3D computer animation.
